Rittenhouse Square Park

Surely one of the Riverwalk neighborhood’s best-loved attractions is Rittenhouse Square Park. Designed in 1683 by William Penn, Rittenhouse Square remains Philadelphia’s most beautiful and popular park. All year round, Philadelphians gather in historic Rittenhouse Square to shop at the weekly farmer’s market, relax, picnic, and attend many of the city’s most popular events.

Celebrate the start of spring in Rittenhouse Square

In early May, locals flock to the park for the annual Rittenhouse Square Spring Festival to watch live entertainment, shop for handmade goods, and snack on locally sourced artisanal foods. For over a century, Pennsylvania farmers have traveled to Philadelphia to sell the region’s finest plants, herbs, and vegetables during the annual Rittenhouse Flower Market, a two-day event sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Organized by the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the Friends of Rittenhouse Square, the spring edition of the Rittenhouse Square Fine Craft Fair features more than 140 booths selling hand-crafted artwork from more than 1,400 artists.

Summer in Philadelphia means spreading out a blanket to sunbathe, picnic with friends, or spread out with a good book in Rittenhouse Square. In June, shop for timeless pieces at the Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Association’s Fine Art Show. Dine in the streets at some of Philadelphia’s best restaurants, including Philadelphia restaurateur Steven Starr’s Parc, Devon Seafood Grill, and Rouge at the 18th Street Fair. Held in the center of the park on the third Thursday every June, the Ball on the Square is Rittenhouse’s annual black-tie gala, featuring an elegant sit-down dinner, a live band, and a night of dancing. At the Soirée on the Square, mingle with other young professionals and support local charities during a night of revelry, ambiance, and music.

The Franklin Institute

Celebrating science, inventions, and the world around us, the Franklin Institute has long been a favorite of Philadelphians young and old. In addition to exhibitions like the famous “Giant Heart,” the Franklin Institute also boasts a full-sized planetarium and an IMAX theatre. Once a month, the museum opens at night for its adults-only “Science After Dark” events, featuring drinks, live performances, activities, and interactive learning on topics like the science of cocktails for adults 21+.

The Barnes Foundation

Founded in 1922 by famed Philadelphia physician and art collector Dr. Alfred C. Barnes, the Barnes Foundation features the181 paintings by Renoir, 69 impressionist works by Cézanne, 59 Matisse paintings and collages, and other famous works by Degas, Seurant, Manel, Titian, Prendergrast, Picasso alongside native jewlery, African masks, ornate metalwork, and prized objects from antiquity. It was once considered the most valuable private collection in the world. In 2012, the collection moved from Dr. Barnes’ famed mansion in Merion, Pennsylvania to its home in Philadelphia’s museum district along the Parkway.
