Welcome to Fishtown, Philadelphia

Families and small businesses have let in a breath of fresh air in what has become Philadelphia’s coolest place to live. Fishtown got its name from commercial shad-fishing, but it’s now the epicenter of arts, culinary attractions, and live music.

Located north of Girard, south of Lehigh, east of Front and west of the Delaware River, Philly’s entrepreneurs and artists have taken the town from status-quo to in-the-know.

Now, one of Philly’s most exciting neighborhoods, we can’t wait to welcome you home to Fishtown.

By Land or By Sea, Fishtown is For Me

When the Germans and Englishmen poured into the town of Kensington in the 1730s, the goal was to create an industrial powerhouse via shipbuilding and fishing. Thus became Fishtown, a working-class community as it has remained until recently. What once was a town that many avoided, quickly became the hip, new landscape for young entrepreneurs and artists.

Amid the modest row homes sit brand new half-million dollar homes. With a median townhouse value of $385,000, a town with a fishy past has birthed a prosperous future.

With beer gardens, artisan butcher shops, whiskey bars, music venues, and vintage boutiques, Fishtown is lined with commercial successes. Named the 2018 Hottest New Neighborhood by Forbes, Fishtown is less than two hours from New Jersey, New York, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. by the I-95.

Fishtown: Young, Hip, and On The Rise

philadelphia skyline When you ask what makes a booming town, many think commercialization. From big box stores to designer names, it screams luxury. But that’s not how Fishtown came to be the neighborhood of the young and bold. Instead, the resurgence of Fishtown is not what it did by the book as much as it was the neighborhood’s trust.

A town that was built by the people continues to grow by that same logic. With large-scale developments by real estate speculators being dismissed and national retailers being pushed out, redevelopment of Fishtown was all by the people who have called it home.

Instead of developers and business owners coming in and making the neighborhood their own, they asked the people what made the community special–and that has made this neighborhood on the rise.

With community trust in hand, the new commercial diversity the town boasts is prepared to withstand long term changes, regardless of the inhabiting demographics.

The Art

Fishtown is pegged as the place to go for Philly murals. Take a look at some of these must-see scapes:

  • Welcome to Fishtown by Evan Lovett in collaboration with Glossblack, located on a building in an empty lot adjacent to Barcade.
  • Life is a Carousel by Evan Lovett, located on Kung Fu Necktie at Front and Thompson Streets.
  • Entanglement by Nilé Livingston, located on the exterior wall of PIZZA Shackamaxon at Girard Avenue and Shackamaxon Street

If murals aren’t your thing, the annual River City Festival, a major fundraiser for the Fishtown Neighbors Association, includes live music, various vendors, and fun for the family of all ages.

Have an afternoon for art? Stop by the Crane Arts at 1400 North American Street; from contemporary art to poetry readings, this is a must see for the creative community.

The Music

If you love live music, Johnny Brenda’s is the place to be. Located at 1201 Frankford Avenue, this gastropub and live music venue shows off hometown pride. From dishes made of locally grown produce and craft beers from the region’s best, the live musical acts are largely Philly natives.

For a larger concert venue, there is the Fillmore Philadelphia on 29 East Allen Street. The building is over 120 years old, and holds three venues in one.
