Make Philly Home: Schuylkill River Trail

All winter, we’ve just been dreaming of springtime in Philadelphia. We can’t wait to get back outside to enjoy the picnics, riverfront events, and long walks or bike rides. Starting with the Schuylkill River Trail.

A popular destination for Philadelphia bikers, walkers, joggers, and more, this trail is the best place to get some outdoor exercise. The Schuylkill River Trail runs along the bank of the Schuylkill River throughout southeastern Pennsylvania.

Today the trail is 75 miles long, but when completed, will stretch 120 miles. Eventually, you’ll be able to follow the trail all the way through Schuylkill, Montgomery, Chester, and Berks counties before ending at Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia. It’s also a popular site for history buffs or parents for kids fascinated by trains, as much of the Schuylkill River Trail was built along former railroad tracks used by the Pennsylvania Railroad. In fact, much of this area is where the American Industrial revolution was born.

A favorite among Philadelphians, the Schuylkill River Trail was named the Best Urban Trail in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice poll in 2015. It’s also part of a nationwide group of trails, connecting Philadelphia with the rest of the East Coast. A section of the trail is a part of the East Coast Greenway, which is 3,000 miles of trails that connect all the way from Maine to Florida

The trail is open every day from sunrise to sunset. While all parts of the trail remain open, some amenities and park buildings may be closed due to the COVID pandemic. If you’ll require use of these, it’s best to check the status online before you leave or plan an afternoon walking the trail. But if we happen to catch a sunny or warmer day through the end of winter, the fun doesn’t have to wait until spring. Bundle up and enjoy a walk outside on the Schuylkill River Trail.
