1830 Rittenhouse Square

Rittenhouse Square Condos and Houses for Sale

In a city such as Philadelphia, it may be difficult to find a piece of Philadelphia real estate that not only matches your specific needs but offers a luxurious lifestyle that you are craving. One such place you can find such high-end living that fits your needs is 1830 Rittenhouse Square.

Known affectionately as the 1830, this condominium building has had a rich history, dating back to the mid-1920s. As one of the first high-rise buildings in the Square, it originally started life as an apartment building. There are two penthouse units that use to be the maid’s quarters back when the building was first built. They are only accessible by taking the elevator to the 18th floor then walking up a flight of stairs. The 1830 is also the last remaining condominium building in Philadelphia to have elevator attendants taken you to your chosen floor.

Each condo in the building is unique and very few of the condos are alike. Each features 10-foot high ceilings and many still have the original hardwood floors. Each home in this highly sought-after building features gorgeous skyline views of both the city and Rittenhouse Square. Although many of the units have been modernized, the 1830 still gives off some of that old-world charm. There is a 24-hour doorman service and allows pets under 75 pounds.

If you’re interested in the 1830, your first call should be to Maxwell Realty. The History of Rittenhouse Square

1830 Rittenhouse Square reminds Philadelphia luxury homeowners of the rich history surrounding the Square. One of the five original open-space parks planned by city founder William Penn and his surveyor Thomas Holme during the late 17th century, it was originally called Southwest Square. The Square was renamed in 1825 after the astronomer and clockmaker David Rittenhouse, one of the leading scientists in his day. The park features designs from the famous architect Paul Philippe Cret, including the pool, the fountain, and many of the entrances.

By the mid-1850s, Rittenhouse Square became the place to live for many of the city’s wealthiest residents. They began building several ornate mansions and it became the home to many wealthy Philadelphian families such as department store founder John Wanamaker; Philadelphia planning commission director Edmund Bacon (and his famous son Kevin Bacon); Philadelphia Railroad president, Alexander Cassatt; and real estate owner, William Weightman.

After World War II, Rittenhouse Square saw a real estate boom as more and more modern apartments, office buildings, and condominiums began popping up around the area. The Victorian mansions gave way to high-rise apartment complexes, as brownstones were changed to storefronts.

Why Should You Live in 1830 Rittenhouse Square?

When it comes to moving to the city, the number one factor everyone takes into consideration is the location of the home. Sure, many luxury condos in Philadelphia can say they have great amenities similar to the 1830, but what makes living in this building and in this neighborhood so special?

Let’s start by giving you a tour of Rittenhouse Square, starting with the park itself.

Rittenhouse Square Park

Even though the neighborhoods surrounding the Square had seen several changes over the decades, the park itself has largely remained the same thanks to the work of Friends of Rittenhouse Square, a partnership with the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. The Friends of Rittenhouse Square has worked hard to keep much of the original architecture intact. From preservation efforts of the statutes to new lighting and landscaping to even doggie bag dispensers, Rittenhouse Square has been one of the few parks in the city that has seen any change.

Dozens of events are held each year include the Rittenhouse Square Spring Festival, the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show, and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. There is also a farmer’s market that is held year-round on Saturdays.

The park is also home to some famous statues, such as Lion Crushing a Serpent by French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye; Duck Girl by Paul Manship; Billy by Albert Laessle; and two stone Greyhound sculptures donated by friends of the late art curator Henry P. McIlhenny.
