Rittenhouse Square: Where Historical Charm Meets Modern Luxury
In the late 1600s, Pennsylvania’s founder William Penn and the first Surveyor General Thomas Holme planned a shining city nestled between two rivers, the Schuylkill and the Delaware. Designing Philadelphia to be a “green country town” full of trees, flowers, and nature, Penn’s blueprints included five large public squares where he hoped communities would gather and spend their time outdoors together. In the very center, Penn drew Rittenhouse Square.
By the mid 1850s, Philadelphia’s wealthiest elites flocked to Rittenhouse Square and the surrounding neighborhood, building ornate mansions along its tree-lined streets.
While the original cobblestone streets have been paved over, the Square remains Philadelphia’s most picturesque park and Rittenhouse is still the neighborhood to live in. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, Philadelphians gather in Rittenhouse Square to shop, dine, admire the manicured gardens, and watch generations of children play by the famous goat statute. In short, centuries later, Rittenhouse remains the cleanest, greenest, and most beautiful neighborhood in Philadelphia, and the only neighborhood that is truly at the center of everything.
